The first day of Western Civ we have homework. Yay.
1) Write a sentence explaining the significance of each term, Fertile crescent, Mesopotamia, City-State, dynasty, cultural diffusion, polytheism, empire, Hammurabi.
Fertile crescent - It is where the first civilizations started.
Mesopotamia - was located in the fertile crescent, and was the first civilization.
City-state - It is an independent government with the territory surrounding it
dynasty - once some of the city-states fell into the hands of the military leaders they let their family take control creating a dynasty
cultural diffusion - when city-states trade they also share their culture
polytheism - They had multiple gods which they though were causes for diffrent natural events
Hammurabi - Leader of Babylonia, and creator of the Code of Hammurabi.
3) What were the three environmental challenges to the Sumerians?
- Unpredictable flooding, with a period of little to no rain.
- No natural barriers for protection, leaving the Sumerian village almost defenceless.
- Natural resources were limited and building supplies were scarce
