The Demographic Transition

Today we looked at a document that talked about demographic transition. There are 4 stages in the demographic transition. 5 depending on where you look.

Stage 1: Low Growth
- Most of human history happened during stage 1
- There are no nations still in stage 1
- The population increased when food was easily found
- The population declined when food was not easily found
Stage 2: High growth
- Rapidly declining death rates
- Very high birth rates
- Countries advanced during the industrial revolution
- A lot of other countries advanced during the medical revolution
Stage 3: Moderate Growth
- CBR begins to drop sharply
- CDR continues to fall
Stage 4: Low growth
- the country starts to reach the point of zero population growth
- TFR of 2.1
- females go into the workforce
- People have less incentive to have kids
